The Basque government will publish the project tomorrow, estimated at 42 million euros plus VAT. The new 2.4 km route starts from Euskalduna Palace and descends to Olabeaga to cross to the island from there.
The extension of Bilbao’s tram, which will connect the city to the island of Zorrozaurre, will save the estuary with a bridge of 100 metersfor what only trams, pedestrians and bicycles or electric scooters will circulate, according to the information study of the Ministry of Territorial Planning, Housing and Transport of the Basque Government. The project will be published tomorrow, Friday, and will be subject to accusations.
The new route will have five stops for a total length of 2.4 kilometers, and costs approx 42 million euros (plus VAT) with a term of two and a half years.
The extension starts shortly after passing the Euskalduna Jauregia stop. Here the tram runs around the Sagrado Corazón roundabout, both towards Zorrozaurre and towards La Casilla. Therefore, after the commissioning, the section that currently runs in front of the office building between the Sagrado Corazón and the Euskalduna roundabout will be abandoned.
The first stop of the new branch is at olabeaga, near the Trokabidea intersection, on a small road that runs from Camino de La Ventosa to the Bilbao district. To get there, the double-track route will descend to the old Renfe platform, now disused, of the line connecting the left bank to Bilbao.
The viaduct will consist of tracks, footpaths and a bidegorri. Once on the island, and pending the completion of the Zorrozaurre urban development plan, there will be four more stops. The first will be located near the Frank Gehry Bridgeconnecting the island to the lower part of Deusto, next to the future South Technology Park.
The tram goes through Galleteras Avenue to the other side of the island and has a second stop next to the building of the old cookie factory from Artiach, and near the Parroquia de San Pablo Apóstol.
The third stop is near the beta buildings, where the Digipen and Mondragon universities are located, and where the Bilbao City Council is carrying out the urbanization work for a new public square and a geothermal project. Finally, the fourth stop on the island is at the level of the future technology park in the north, opposite the Lancor and close to the bridge of San Ignacio.
