The general coordinator of the LAB union, Garbine Aranburu, was interviewed this morning in Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, where she spoke about outstanding labor disputes, among other things. Strike days have been announced in Bizkaia’s metallurgical sector for the next two weeks. According to Garbiñe Aranburu, “It is in the hands of the employers not to implement these interruptions, but the attitude of the employers today makes it impossible to reach an agreement.” LAB has pointed out that the salary increase is one of the causes of the blockade in the negotiations, but not the only one, and has pointed to the flexibility and the additional losses. “A decent deal has to be struck and that’s where we are,” he explained.

The agreement reached in the metal sector of Álava has had different interpretations. According to LAB, it has been a historic struggle that has produced a historic result in which the purchasing power of workers is guaranteed. However, ELA believes that most metal workers in Álava will not receive a raise. In this context, Garbiñe Aranburu has accused ELA of lying: “He has had to resort to lies to justify his point of view.” While acknowledging that there are very different realities among employees, he emphasized that it is an advantage for all of them that there is a sectoral agreement “because it regulates many other things besides salary”.

At a time when governments are presenting their budget proposals, Garbiñe Aranburu has demanded a change of course in government policy. “The situation requires a change of direction in government policy, a structural change,” he added. He has also demanded that the tax reform debate be opened to, among other things, increase revenues.

The day after the government of Navarra approved the draft budget for 2023, Garbiñe Aranburu believes the personal income tax deduction for income less than 32,000 euros falls short. “There is no progressiveness in fiscal policy and 75 out of every 100 euros is paid by workers’ income and that’s what we need to focus on. Reform is necessary and until these measures are implemented they fall short, even if they going in the right direction,” he added.
