6 million animals killed – Netherlands: Deadliest bird flu in 20 years

Date:

Due to the rampant bird flu, the Dutch authorities have already had to kill about six million animals this year. It was the deadliest outbreak of bird flu in almost 20 years, the Dutch regulator NVWA announced in Utrecht on Thursday. Poultry is especially affected. In 2003, about 30 million animals were euthanized on 255 farms.

According to the information, the largest outbreak to date has been found on a farm in Heythuysen in the southeastern province of Limburg, near the border with North Rhine-Westphalia. About 300,000 laying hens were infected there. These would be killed in the coming days.

New variant of bird flu is highly contagious
A new variant of the virus was discovered for the first time in the Netherlands a year ago. The H5N1 variant is said to be highly contagious and has now been found in 96 sites across the country, mainly among poultry farmers. Avian flu is currently prevalent in many European countries.
