British Prime Minister Liz Truss, who has come under heavy pressure, has threatened opponents in the parliamentary faction of her Conservative party with disciplinary measures. The government said Thursday that the group leadership would meet with Tory MPs who did not support the government in Wednesday’s vote. Those who did not have a reasonable excuse to do so should take appropriate disciplinary action.
In this way, Truss wants to bring peace back to her group after chaotic scenes and skirmishes broke out between MPs on Wednesday in a vote on fracking, where it was not clear whether it was also a vote of confidence. Despite the dissent, the government won the vote.
Ministers throw in the towel
Transport Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan told the BBC she was shocked by reports that Tory MPs had been harassed to force them to vote with the government. But Truss has the confidence of the cabinet.
When asked if Truss would lead the Conservatives in the next general election, she told Times Radio, “I think that’s still the case at this point.” On Wednesday, Home Secretary Suella Braverman announced her resignation and also criticized Truss.
Truss faces a vote of no confidence
According to media reports, Truss could face a vote of no confidence from her faction later this week. She succeeded Boris Johnson only about six weeks ago, who had resigned after several scandals and scandals under pressure from his own party. But Truss has been fighting for her political survival in office since mid-September after her tax cut plans caused a financial market fiasco and felt compelled to turn around.
Discontent with and resistance to her grew in her party. According to polls, the Conservatives are about 30 percentage points behind the opposition Labor party. At YouGov research institute, Truss is the most unpopular head of government since the surveys began.
