Kremlin furious – arms deals: Russian governor’s son in custody

Date:

Two Russians have been arrested in Europe because the US suspects them of illegally selling US technology to Russian defense contractors. One of them is the son of the governor of a Siberian region. The Kremlin condemns the arrests: Moscow will do “everything possible” to defend those affected, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Artyom Uss was arrested in Italy, Moscow confirmed on Thursday — he is the son of Krasnoyarsk governor Alexander Uss. The arrest was made at Washington’s Malpensa airport on Monday at Washington’s request. “Our diplomatic missions will of course participate in protecting the interests of this Russian citizen,” Peskov said on Friday.

On Wednesday, US judges charged about a dozen people with selling US technology to Russia, some of which Washington says were used in the war in Ukraine.

US Department of Justice requests extradition
Another Russian suspect in the case, Yuri Urekhov, was arrested in Germany on Monday, according to Washington. The US Department of Justice wants to request the extradition of the two men to the United States.

Moscow and Washington are currently negotiating a prisoner exchange, including American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia for drug trafficking.
