In three days, a gang of thieves in India dismantled an approximately 18-meter-long iron bridge and stole its parts. According to their own statements, the police have now been able to arrest eight people, the Indian news agency ANI reported Monday. Among those arrested was an employee of the water supply authority, who is said to have known about the theft.
In this context, the police seized an excavator, 247 kilograms of iron and other materials. The thieves may have also sold the metal to scrap dealers, local television channel NDTV reports. Metal keeps disappearing in India and then quickly becomes money with scrap dealers.
Get help from government officials
Police say the thieves dismantled the disused 1970s bridge in the particularly poor state of Bihar in broad daylight and took its parts in trucks. They pretended to be employees of an irrigation agency and even enlisted the help of local officials. Then they disappeared.
Villagers eventually informed the irrigation agency proper and filed a complaint, an engineer at the agency told ANI.
