Boris Johnson’s return as British Prime Minister would be “a big mistake”, according to historian Sir Ian Kershaw. “That would be an own goal for the Conservatives,” said the award-winning English scholar and bestselling author. “They kicked him out two months ago. He fooled himself and was also very unpopular with the population. But there is a faint hope among many Tories that Johnson will be a campaign winner.”
He himself does not believe that the Conservatives can win elections with Johnson, Kershaw said. On the contrary: “It would be a gift to Labor if they took Johnson back.” Although Johnson won votes in Labor strongholds in northern England in the 2019 general election, these constituencies would now all return to Labour.
Kershaw, 79, is considered one of the most important historians of our time. His major works include a two-volume biography of Hitler and a two-volume history of the 20th century. He is the recipient of the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding and the Charlemagne Medal. In 2002, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
