Dramatic scenes in Berlin-Tiergarten: A 79-year-old jumped into the Landwehr Canal on Thursday to save his beloved dog. While the animal survived and was brought to shore, the courageous attempt ended fatally for the owner.
The centuries-old tributary of Berlin’s Spree became the scene of the tragedy. Passers-by saw the animal lover throw himself into the water at the Cornelius Bridge to help his dog, a police spokesman confirmed to German media.

He also managed to rescue him safely to shore, but he could not get out of the water on his own and simply sank. An emergency call was immediately made: 36 firefighters rushed to the scene and desperately searched for the man with helicopter support.
Divers eventually rescued the 79-year-old with a boat. Despite immediate attempts to revive him, they were unable to do anything for him. The dog has since been taken in by family members.
