Toxic ammonia gas escaped on Sunday morning during water purification in a biomass combined heat and power plant in Heiligenkreuz (Burgenland). The cause of this is still unknown, no one was injured.
A worker noticed the pungent smell during a patrol, but was unable to enter the warehouse and notified emergency services, the Jennersdorf city fire department reported. Because it was a highly corrosive gas that was life-threatening even in high doses, respiratory protection wearers also had to wear a heavy chemical full body protective suit.
After about 30 minutes, the exit point was closed and the already escaped gas was removed from the warehouse with a pressure aerator. Finally, the firefighters in their suits also had to be disinfected. There was no danger to the environment, nor were people harmed, it said.
