Eight months after the war started in Ukraine, Russia has accused Ukraine of wanting to use a dirty bomb or radiological weapon. Ukrainian authorities have denied the charges and believe Russia is seeking excuses to justify the use of nuclear weapons. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed the threat of a nuclear attack on more than one occasion, with unforeseen consequences for both the region and the world.
The main element of dirty bombs are ordinary explosives, such as dynamite, but it also contains pellets or radioactive dust. Due to the explosion of the device, the associated material spreads in the vicinity. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded two decades ago that “the most serious impact” of a radiological weapon would be “the panic and social disturbances” the detonation would cause, akin to “an act of terrorism”.
France, Britain and the United States believe Russia’s allegations that Ukraine is preparing to use a “dirty bomb” are “blatantly false”. “No one would be fooled by attempting to use this accusation as a pretext for escalation. More broadly, we reject any pretext for escalation by Russia,” the parties said in a joint statement, broadcast early this morning.
Situation on the war front
Ukraine’s counter-offensive in the southern Kherson region, where Kiev continues to retake territory, has placed Russia in a dilemma: fight or retreat.
According to Kiev and some Western analyses, Russian troops have already begun to withdraw, in parallel with the evacuation of civilians from the region and from the only provincial capital under their control.
The General Staff stated that “the enemy has completely deserted the towns of Charivne and Chkalove – about 50 kilometers north of the Russian-controlled city of Nova Kakhovka and on the left bank of the Dnieper River – and that the officers and medical personnel are ” evacuated from Berislav, across the street.
The loss of Kherson, essential to the land corridor it has created from east to south and to the protection and water supply of the annexed Crimean peninsula, would put Russia in one of its worst blows since the start of the war.
