An exotic but harmless corn snake ‘lived’ for three years in the catacombs of the diocese of Graz. Now “Lucifer” was banned from the “Garden of Eden”.
“There is no such thing as a crucifix,” reptile and amphibian expert Werner Stangl thought to himself more than once. For almost 40 times he went in search of the cheeky corn snake. She should have escaped sometime in 2019, because from then on she was repeatedly spotted at the Episcopal Ordinariate in Graz or left her skin there. Bishops officials knew.
Snake fooled the expert
The animal – christened with the name “Lucifer” – did very colorfully in the summer of 2020. It made itself comfortable in a jeweler’s display case between bracelets and earrings. ‘Now I have you,’ thought Werner Stangl. But as if the reptile had smelled it, it had disappeared back into the catacombs of the church. It left – not at all pious – a pile of feces in the jewelry display…
Caught while sunbathing in “Paradise”.
Recently, “Lucifer” took it a little too easy: he rose from the deep and lay down in the “paradise” – in the bishop’s garden – to sunbathe. Werner Stangl happened to be out and about with his wife in the center of Graz and decided to take a short tour of the “Garden of Eden”. Hoping for nothing, he could hardly believe his eyes: in the middle sat “Lucifer”, who was just digesting a mouse! A certain grasp of the expert, in the snake bag – the “banishment from paradise” was carried out.
But don’t worry, the viper is safe, she’s fine, she survived the three years in the catacombs just fine. And diocesan bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl can again walk undisturbed and snake-free through the beautiful garden.
