As interior minister, Matteo Salvini caused a stir by blocking refugee ships, and now that he’s been impeached, a new round threatens: as infrastructure minister, sidelined, he has fooled his co-government with a political trick. The declaration of war against the NGOs, the organizations that bring refugees to Italy by ship, followed on the first day of the new government.
“Salvini is ready to resume the war with the NGOs,” headlined the famous “La Repubblica” on the first day of the new right-wing government under Giorgia Meloni. The ‘Capitano’, as his fans call him, will soon be doing what should have been prevented: taking control of the Italian ports used by refugee boats. And so the problems with the EU and human rights organizations begin again. But first things first.
