The national holiday on October 26 is celebrated again in the old normality after two years of Corona mode. The army is fully back to its action on the Heldenplatz in Vienna, the doors of the government and parliament open again.
The national holiday traditionally started with a wreath laying by Alexander Van der Bellen, other members of the government and senior military personnel in the shrine of the castle gate. “In silent memory of the soldiers who fell for Austrian freedom and the victims of fascism,” the Federal President announced via Twitter.
Afterwards there is a grand swearing in at Heldenplatz and a viaduct with two Eurofighters and a C-130 Hercules. “The planes will form in the Tulln area and fly over Heldenplatz at 10:56 am at an altitude of 300 meters,” army spokesman Michael Bauer said via Twitter. The return flight is via Mödling or Tulln.
The government is transparent in the afternoon: from 12:00 to 16:30, interested parties in groups can visit the representative buildings of the Federal Chancellery and meet government members, including Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
Other ministries in the government district are also open to visitors. This also applies to parliament in its temporary quarters in the Hofburg. And on National Day, the Constitutional Court (VfGH) is also open to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
For the first time, there is no real open day at Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. However, he receives “civil society representatives” at his premises in the Hofburg.
