China approves first inhaled corona vaccine

Date:

The world’s first inhaled vaccine against Covid-19 was approved in China on Tuesday. The vaccine, called Convidecia Air, can also be used as a booster injection and can be self-administered. Since Wednesday, Shanghai has been offering the needle-free vaccine, which according to the manufacturer, CanSino Biologics Inc., is intended to elicit a strong immune response.

Convidecia Air is inhaled as a fine mist – the “vaccination” takes less than a minute. The vector vaccine from Tanjin-based company CanSino Biologics had already received emergency clearance from the national approval authority NMPA in the first week of September.

One respiratory protection
A nebulizer converts the liquid vaccine into an aerosol that is inhaled through the mouth. Comprehensive protection against Covid-19 is already in place after just one breath, CanSino Biologics said in a statement.

Studies would show that the Convidecia Air vaccine can induce strong humoral (affecting body fluids), cellular and mucosal (affecting the mucous membranes) immunity, according to the manufacturer. The triple protection should help to effectively contain the risk of infection and the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

In several countries, including the United States, Canada and Cuba, scientists are working on vaccines that can be administered through the nose. According to the researchers, these could provide extra immunity in the nasal mucosa against the pathogen SARS-CoV-2.

China has approved eight domestic corona vaccines since 2020. Vaccines against the virus developed abroad are not approved in the People’s Republic.
