American entrepreneur Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network does not only bring high-speed internet to the most remote corners of the earth. It also acts as a pillar of the Ukrainian military and serves as a tool for the protest movement in Iran against censorship. Another authoritarian state draws its lessons from this: China is researching technologies that could destroy Starlink.
China has been monitoring the war in Ukraine for months – and is concerned about the Ukrainian military’s use of Starlink satellites. Their ability to replace destroyed infrastructure and maintain communications is seen as a military risk. Therefore, Beijing wants to enable its armed forces to destroy Starlink if necessary. Even the use of nuclear weapons is being considered.
