Mild verdict – 19 illegal migrants crammed into small trucks

Date:

A young Latvian now had to answer for himself as a smuggler in Eisenstadt. He had previously “celebrated” his 21st birthday in prison.

On August 1, this year, a Latvian drove a small Mercedes Sprinter truck not over the Andau bridge, but through the regular border crossing. The 20-year-old had crammed 19 illegal immigrants into the hold. The handcuffs clicked upon entering. Ralf K. spent his 21st birthday in Eisenstadt prison.

During the trial in Eisenstadt, the young, well-educated man, who spoke German very well and behaved politely and correctly, explained his motive: “I just wanted to go for a ride because I would have been paid about 1,300 euros for it. I wanted to use the money to support my mother and marry my girlfriend.”

Recruited via Snapchat
He was recruited via Snapchat: “The organization paid us to fly from Latvia to Budapest. From there we drove by car to the Slovakian capital Pressburg, where we eventually rented the small trucks for the actual journey.” Before the jury left to deliberate, the young Eastern European asked for a mild verdict.

Councilors were mild
After much deliberation, the chairman of the court finally announced the decision of the Senate: Ralf K. was sentenced to a partially suspended prison sentence of 15 months, five of which were unconditional. Sobbing, with tears in his eyes and hands folded, the 21-year-old thanked him for the leniency granted to him by the court and solemnly swore that he would lead an honest life in the future…
