During the blasting work for the second tube of the Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland, construction workers encountered numerous beautiful crystals. Experts speak of a highly remarkable find. The site is located approximately 300 meters from the tunnel entrance in the ceiling area.
The boss of the explosion reacted exemplary and immediately called the cantonal supervisor for minerals on the mat, Uri’s construction department announced on Friday. At the end of September, the Uri Minerals Inspectorate salvaged several hundred kilos of crystal rock from a gorge.
“One of the best finds in years”
Numerous quartz specimens, apophyllites and pink fluorites (picture above) were found. The latter in particular would have excellent quality. This is one of the best finds in Switzerland in years, says geologist Peter Amacher through the Uri Minerals Inspectorate.
Within about 24 hours, he and his team recovered several hundred pounds of crystal rock using a lifting platform. Amacher had already taken over the supervision of the minerals during the construction of the SBB power station in Amsteg and the Gotthard base tunnel. In 2011, he published the book “NEAT minerals – crystal treasures deep in the mountain”.
The most beautiful crystals can be seen
The stones that have now been found belong to the canton of Uri. The finds are currently being cleaned, sorted, registered and assessed for their material value. The best ones go into the exhibition.
