According to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Beijing has increasing power to restructure the international order. Meanwhile, Russia is already seen as a “direct and sharp threat”.
It is not Russia that is currently waging a war of aggression in Ukraine, but China sees the US administration as the biggest permanent threat in its new military strategy. It is the only country that “both wants to restructure the international order and increasingly has the strength to do so,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said when presenting the new strategy.
Russian aggression ‘immediate and sharp threat’
Russia, on the other hand, is classified as an “acute” threat. Austin emphasized that the word was chosen carefully: “Unlike China, Russia cannot systematically challenge the United States in the long run. But Russian aggression is a direct and acute threat to our interests and values.”
As for Iran, Austin said the country does not have a nuclear weapon and “we currently believe it is not trying to get one”. However, Iran is building nuclear capabilities.
