Ten years ago, the first Peace Forest was opened in Carinthia. The rush for this form of burial is now greater than ever.
The old custom of burying your ashes near a tree was revived 30 years ago in a number of countries, including our neighbors Germany and Switzerland. “People kept coming to us and asking why this was not possible in this country,” recalls Ingo Sternig of the Carinthia funeral home. It has been going on since October 2012, after it took at least two years after the first attempt, until the amendment to the burial law with the passage was naturally buried.
And the offer is gratefully accepted to this day. The thought of finding your final resting place on a tree in a forest and reuniting after death with the nature you loved so much in life seems to appeal to many people.
