Hundreds of people fell into the Machchhu River on Sunday when a suspension bridge collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The first reports speak of 32 dead. According to reports, the cable-stayed bridge was only operational again five days ago after a renovation.
“People have fallen into the river and people have been injured. We don’t have exact figures yet. Rescue efforts are underway,” Rahul Tripathi, a senior police officer at the scene, told Reuters.
Gujarat Home Affairs Minister Harsh Sanghavi told India Today that more than 70 people have been rescued and taken to hospital. He also said that most of the rescued people were out of danger.
According to media reports, the construction would not have been able to withstand the strain of too many people.
