As the opposition failed to topple the government, the Social Security budget was approved in first reading, though it had yet to be examined by the Senate
The Gallic government today surpassed two motions of censure tabled by La Francia Insumisa and Regroupación Nacional. The far-left and far-right parties presented them after the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, resorted to Article 49.3 of the Constitution to quickly approve the Social Security budget without submitting the text to the deputies’ vote. The two motions of censure were rejected by the deputies. As the opposition failed to topple the French government, the social security budget was approved at first reading. The text has yet to be examined by the Senate.
“Nupes, aided by National Realignment, has again failed to overthrow the government. But behind the failure of its opposition at all costs, the rapprochement of the extremes is confirmed. Gone are the days of ideas, barriers (for the far right) and reason…” Olivier Véran, spokesman for Emmanuel Macron’s cabinet, complained on Twitter. Only 90 deputies voted in favor of the motion of censure by National Regroupment, the party of far-right Marine Le Pen, far from the 289 votes needed to pass it.
The one presented only by La France Insumisa, the party of leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, was also rejected, despite having the votes of the far right. He won a total of 218 votes, 21 votes less than the censure motion tabled last week by Nupes, the alliance of left-wing parties, and also backed by National Regrouping.
Nupes – which brings together La France Insumisa, the Socialist Party, Europe Ecology-The Greens (EE-LV) and the Communist Party – is divided on whether it is a good strategy to systematically file a motion of censure every time the government resorts to Article 49.3. The unexpected support from the far right for the left’s censure motion presented last week also sowed discord among the left-wing alliance’s partners.
Twelve socialist deputies, four ecologists and six communists did not vote on La Francia Insumisa’s motion of censure, France Info reported. According to the Constitution, only votes for the motion of censure are taken into account. You cannot vote against it. To topple the government, the left and far right needed the support of Republicans. The moderate right (62 seats in the National Assembly) had already said it would not support any motion.
