Also this year, the Viennese professional rescue service has not been idle from the streets and blue light operations. Just in time for Halloween, she presented her new video for Monday’s scary night – but again to point out a major problem the helpers struggle with every day.
The problem addressed in the horror video: Not every emergency call that comes in at 144 is an emergency. “The topic we cover in this video is very important to us,” says Daniel Melcher of the Vienna Professional Rescue Service. “Unfortunately, it happens time and again that colleagues are warned about operations that are not intended for emergency relief.”
Many emergency calls would not require a rolling intensive care unit. Specifically, the number of calls that turn out to be non-emergency calls accounts for at least ten percent per day, Melcher explains. In the event of flu or toothache, general practitioners or specialists, the medical radio service (141) or the health hotline (1450) are the appropriate persons to contact.
According to Melcher, however, the problem is not limited to Vienna. A similar situation can be observed throughout Austria and also in neighboring Germany. Still, they want to emphasize: “We want people to call 144.” But only in real emergencies.
