Agreement secured – Israel and Hamas exchange hostages for prisoners

Date:

On Wednesday evening, the Israeli government and Hamas finalized their announced agreement, which provides for the release of 50 kidnapped hostages. In return, Palestinian prisoners will be released and a four-day ceasefire will be observed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced this last night. When the break in fighting begins will be announced within the next 24 hours, Qatar said on Wednesday morning. The Gulf state government has mediated between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas. She had already stated on Sunday that only ‘minor’ obstacles had to be overcome for an agreement. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was also involved. The deal is now monitored by the Red Cross.

Women and children are released
Israeli and Palestinian sources reported that 50 hostages kidnapped in the Gaza Strip will be released. In return, Israeli authorities release 150 Palestinian prisoners. According to Hamas, women and children were involved on both sides. A senior White House official said three American citizens would also be released, including a three-year-old child.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Tuesday evening that it was a “difficult but right decision”. The government emphasized that the agreement did not mean the end of the war. All abductees must be returned and it must be ensured “that there is no further threat to the State of Israel from the Gaza Strip.”

Hamas also affirmed the agreement, at times pointing out that it served to strengthen the “population’s stubbornness against aggression.” Additional humanitarian aid could be provided during the agreed four-day ceasefire “to alleviate the suffering of innocent Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip,” US President Joe Biden said.

Biden: “Tireless diplomacy”
The agreement is a “testament to tireless diplomacy.” On October 7, hundreds of fighters from Hamas and other terrorist organizations entered Israel and began atrocities, mainly against civilians. According to Israeli figures, about 1,200 people were killed and 240 others were taken to the Gaza Strip. In response, the Israeli army began attacking targets in the Gaza Strip from the air and on the ground. According to Hamas, more than 1,400 people have been killed in the war since then.
