The Brazilian president will speak for the first time since Lula’s victory as his teams make contacts to start the transfer of power
Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro will make an official statement about his electoral defeat on Tuesday afternoon, Communications Minister Fabio Fara said. The spokesman also added that the far-right leader will not contest the election results.
According to the Reuters agency, Bolsonaro is expected to meet with Supreme Court justices before his speech. In addition, the President’s Chief of Staff, Ciro Nogueira, has taken the first step to begin the transition of government by providing President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s team with a place to start working, as reported by the party of workers. Lula is due to come to power on January 1.
Bolsonaro lost last Sunday in the second round of the elections to left-wing ex-president Lula. Until now, however, he has remained silent and did not admit his defeat.
This situation only created tensions and doubts about how the Bolsonarist bases could respond, as Bolsonaro had expressed doubts about the vote-counting system during the election campaign. In recent hours, truck convoys have erected more than 200 roadblocks in several states of the country in protest of the president’s defeat.
