Peru declares a state of emergency in Lima, Puno, Cusco and other provinces due to the wave of protests

The measure takes effect today and will last for the next 30 days. In addition, the curfew in Pruno has been extended by ten days from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The government of Peru this Sunday issued the decree extending the state of emergency in the departments of Cusco, Lima and Puno, the province of Callao and other regions because of the increase in protests that are sweeping the entire country against the government of President Dina Boluarte. The measure takes effect today, January 15 lasts for the next 30 days.

The decision states that during that period “Constitutional rights relating to the inviolability of the home, freedom of transit through the national territory, freedom of assembly, and personal liberty and security are suspended.”

In addition to the above regions, a state of emergency has also been declared in the province of Andahuaylas in the department of Apurímac, in the provinces of Tambopata and Tahuamanu in the department of Madre de Dios, and in the district of Torata, province of Mariscal Nieto in the department of Moquegua. Likewise, it included five national highways: the Panamericana Sur, the Panamericana Norte, Central, the South Apurímac-Cuzco-Arequipa Road Corridor, and the South Interoceanic Road Corridor.

On the other hand, the norm has extended the curfew in the Puno department by ten days —from 20:00 to 04:00 (local time)—.

Since the protests began last December, 329 civilians have been arrested in anti-government demonstrations. 42 people have died -41 civilians and a police officer- and 531 wounded -355 civilians and 176 police officers-.
