In view of the ongoing storms in California, US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency for the state. That means that federal money can be released for reconstruction, among other things, the White House announced late Saturday evening (local time).
Grants may also be available for emergency shelter, home repairs and uninsured property damage, the White House statement said.
Thousands of households without power
Since December 27, California has been plagued by severe winter storms, flooding, landslides and mudslides. Severe weather warnings apply to millions of residents, thousands of households are without power.
On Saturday, the usually sun-drenched west coast state again saw heavy rain and some snowfall. So far, at least 19 deaths have been reported, for example from falling trees or flash floods.
