Jerusalem incident – Police prevented demonstrators from marching

Date:

Far-right Israelis clashed with police in Jerusalem on Thursday evening. The officers prevented the demonstrators from marching through the old city. Previously there was criticism that the police had approved the right-wing demonstration.

Participants sometimes called for a “restoration of full Jewish control in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount.” The Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam. But it is also sacred to Jews because there used to be two Jewish temples there. The participants also demanded that the Islamic Wakf authority be expelled from the Temple Mount. This is responsible for administration, while the Israeli side is responsible for security. Under an agreement with authorities, Jews are allowed to visit the facility but are not allowed to pray there. However, there are always violations.

“Bullet in the head for every terrorist”
According to a brochure, the march would also go through the Muslim neighborhood on Thursday evening. Israeli television reported that some people were carrying signs that violated an agreement. “One bullet in the head for each terrorist and there will be no coexistence with enemies,” it said. Video footage shows the demonstrators chanting and shouting their demands. The police take some of them away and prevent them from marching through the old city.

From a Palestinian perspective, demands such as full Jewish control over the Israeli capital are a provocation. The Jordanian government also condemned the approval of the march. The neighboring country warned against “the continuation of unilateral and illegal Israeli actions aimed at changing the historical and legal status” of Jerusalem and its holy sites.

The Israeli army captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967. The Palestinians claim the areas for their own state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
