Already one fatality: fire in Graz restaurant due to New Year’s Eve lighting?

Date:

After a bar in the city center of Graz caught fire on Monday morning, killing one person and injuring 20 people, some seriously injured, police have now discovered new details. The researchers now assume a ‘subjective cause’. A technical defect was therefore excluded.

On New Year’s Eve, a fire broke out in a restaurant on Sporgasse in Graz around 4 a.m. According to the latest information from the police, 21 guests were so seriously injured that they were taken to hospital. Three people required intensive medical care and a young woman died in the fire. Her identity was not yet clear; police said she was probably 20 to 25 years old. A technical defect was ruled out.

Burns and smoke poisoning
The fire broke out at the entrance to the bar and spread to the furniture and decorations. The smoke was likely heavy and caused many injuries, according to another police report Monday afternoon. The injured suffered smoke inhalation and burns.

Technical defect excluded
A technical cause of the fire has now been ruled out. Investigators believe the fire had a “subjective cause.” A pyrotechnic object could be the cause of the tragedy. The investigation into this is still ongoing. Police are asking possible witnesses to come forward. The first investigations have not yet yielded any new information, says police spokesman Fritz Grundnig.
