The future Slovenian government wants to dismantle the border fence with Croatia by the end of this year. The planned construction of the new nuclear power plant in Krsko will respect the outcome of a referendum. This is apparent from the coalition program of the left-liberal government led by ex-manager Robert Golob, which has been circulating in the media.
The outgoing government gave the green light for the second reactor block last year by starting the necessary approval process. The future government, which also supports nuclear energy, promises transparency and independence in investment decisions. According to the coalition program, only Western technologies are acceptable. In addition, the introduction of new technologies, eg B. are tested by small modular reactors.
Fence “ineffective and inhumane”
As for the fence on the border with neighboring Croatia, which has been expanded since 2015, the dismantling is announced. According to the new coalition parties, the barbed wire fence and other technical barriers have proved “ineffective and inhumane”. The focus should primarily be on prosecuting criminal gangs of people smugglers. A new migration strategy is also planned, which will create a departure from the previous hardliner policy. A simplification of asylum procedures is announced and an explicit commitment is made to “absolutely respect” human rights in migration policy.
Construction started at the end of 2015
Construction of the border fence at the Schengen external border began in late 2015 in the wake of the refugee crisis. Since then, more than 200 kilometers of the fence has been placed on the 380 kilometer long border with the mainland between the two EU countries Slovenia and Croatia. The fence, consisting of barbed wire fence (picture above) or fence panels, is officially called a “temporary technical barrier”.
In terms of foreign policy, the future government wants to “build the country’s reputation based on respect for human rights and the well-being and security of our planet”. External policy priorities include increased support for the EU’s development dimension and a more ambitious and effective common foreign and security policy. Furthermore, the EU membership of the Western Balkan countries is supported.
With regard to relations with neighboring countries, only Croatia is explicitly mentioned in the coalition programme. The future government wants to press for the implementation of the arbitral award at the border. Otherwise Slovenia would need a “clearer” policy towards all neighboring countries and also towards the region (Alps, Mediterranean and Western Balkans). Slovenia’s role in the Alpine-Danube-Mediterranean region should be strengthened, with an emphasis on cooperation with northern Adriatic coastal states.
There should be a new government at the beginning of June
The future left-liberal government consists of the victorious green-liberal Freedom Movement (GS), the Social Democrats (SD) and the left (Levica). The three-party government is expected to take office in early June.
