At a zoo in Sydney, five lions caused a stir with an outbreak: the animals were spotted next to their enclosure on Wednesday morning and an “emergency” was called. Guests staying at the zoo near the lion enclosure for a “glamping” experience had to flee their luxury tents. How the big cats escaped is still a mystery.
Four cubs and an adult lion suddenly found themselves next to their enclosure at Taronga Zoo around 6:40 am – in an area separated from the rest of the zoo only by a fence. The alarm was then raised to warn staff and campers of the runaways. The approximately 50 overnight guests had to leave their tents within a short time and were taken to a safe building.
A lion had to be stunned
The escape of the big cats was short-lived: four lions voluntarily returned to their enclosure and one young animal had to be stunned. The zoo reported that it was “awake and healthy” after the incident. As Taronga Zoo has explained, there are strict security protocols in place for such incidents. They acted quickly and the situation was under control within minutes. The zoo remained open, only the lion enclosure is not accessible to visitors during the research.
