The weather experts’ forecasts are currently sounding the alarm: heavy rain, snowfall and storms could cause chaos and destruction this weekend – Chancellor Nehammer has already ordered preparations!
Rain, rain and sometimes snow again: the weather forecasts for the coming days are ringing alarm bells for meteorologists and emergency services. While many people are still waiting, hoping and praying, expert Christian Csekits from Geosphere Austria is already shaking his head: “Unfortunately, the cold front from the north and the Mediterranean will keep us busy for a long time. Although you should always be careful with the weather forecasts, we assume that up to 400 liters per square meter of precipitation will fall in many places by Monday. This could then result in a hundred-year flood.”
Perhaps just a pessimistic look into the crystal ball, but the coming hours can already provide certainty. On Thursday, the persistent rain started in the south, with heavy showers already being reported from Carinthia, the southeastern parts of Styria and southern Burgenland. Especially in the Carnic Alps area, more than 100 millimeters are expected in one day.
Rain, snow and storms are a combination of disasters
While smaller streams and rivers in local valleys are already swelling, the snowfall line is even dropping below 1000 meters. There is already widespread fear of snowfall, as there are still many leaves on the trees.
To make matters worse, the wind will also increase in the eastern region from Saturday. If all the parameters here are correct, the ground will be softened and storms of almost 100 kilometers per hour will pull the trees out of the soft ground like birthday candles. That would be a combination of horror, they say!
These circumstances naturally also force the emergency services to take action. The fire brigade, the armed forces, etc. are preparing for a major operation.
The Chancellor issues the “order” for an emergency
Before the first sirens even sounded, a section of the civilian population along the Danube, Inn and Salzach equipped themselves with sandbags yesterday, which also alarmed federal politicians. On the ‘order’ of Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP), Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and ‘military chief’ Klaudia Tanner analyzed the situation.
“Our emergency services are ready to help and support where needed. Fire departments, but also the armed forces and civil defense institutions are well prepared, our crisis security advisor and his team have already prepared situation reports,” says Nehammer.
When asked about the unrest in Vienna, Floriani boss Robert Mayer seemed relaxed: “We are closely monitoring the weather forecasts; in an emergency we can activate helpers from less affected districts or states.”
