“Lady of the Dunes” is what researchers called a badly mutilated body found nearly half a century ago in the small town of Provincetown, Massachusetts. Now, with the help of DNA analysis, among other things, the identity of the murder victim has been clarified.
The murder victim was Ruth Marie Terry, then 37, of Tennessee, FBI Agent Joe Bonavolonta told reporters near Boston. In an effort to obtain additional information relevant to the murder, the FBI has filed a new appeal that includes four photos of the now-identified woman.
Victims’ hands were chopped off
The body of the woman, whose hands had been cut off — likely to make identification difficult — was discovered on July 26, 1974, on the Cape Cod Peninsula, which is popular with tourists. She had been killed by a blow to the head, believed to be several weeks before she was found. This was “almost completely separated from the body”. No murder weapon was found near the body, Bonavolonta said.
The FBI cleared the body using DNA analysis, historical records and traditional genealogy research, they said. It remains unclear who killed Ruth Marie Terry. However, the police are still investigating to finally get clarity about the case of the “woman from the dunes”, according to the police.
