Convoy attack – Pakistani ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan shot

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was assassinated on Thursday. The former cricketer was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. His condition should not be life-threatening. The alleged attacker is already in custody, he has made a confession.

Khan has been on a protest march in the capital Islamabad since Friday. He had to give up his position as prime minister after a vote of no confidence in the spring of this year, now the 70-year-old wants to push through new elections.

His convoy was attacked on Thursday in Punjab province and other party members may have been injured. According to rescuers, there should even be one death. The incident caused panic in the crowd, which in turn led to more injuries.

“Shocking Attack”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the act. Pakistani President Arif Alvi spoke on Twitter of a “shocking attack”. According to the police, there are already small protests in various parts of the capital Islamabad.

Local media reported that a man had been arrested. He allegedly made a confession. The man may have acted alone.
