The report of the Linz Street Name Commission, presented Tuesday morning in the old town hall by SP city head Klaus Luger and city archive director Walter Schuster, spans 1800 pages. 61 men and three women were problematized. Four of them will probably disappear from the Linz city map sooner or later.
For three years, the six-member committee led by Walter Schuster, director of the Linz City Archives, examined the street names in Linz and their namesakes for possible contamination related to National Socialism, anti-Semitism, racism or authoritarian ideas. Some things could be analyzed relatively quickly thanks to the state and state archives, other research conducted through the German federal archives in Berlin – for example on some Nazi past – took up to four months. “You now have a general overview. The biographies of 96 people were included in five categories,” Schuster presented the 1,800-page report yesterday with city boss Klaus Luger (SPÖ).
Four persons in category 1
The first three categories with 64 people are considered problematic. Category 1 includes four individuals whose active actions and extremely strong dissemination of group-specific enmity or involvement in crimes against humanity were confirmed by the report. These are: composer Hans Pfitzner, designer Ferdinand Porsche, entertainer Franz Resl and Bishop Johannes Maria Gföllner, who played a central role in the abolition of democracy in Austria.
From Dinghofer to Wagner
Category 2, which is also a problem, also includes 21 well-known names such as Dinghofer, Gleißner, Hamerling, von Karajan, Raab, Stelzhamer and Wagner. SP city boss Klaus Luger: “We decide in the city senate what happens to the negative street names.” The renaming of the street names with category 1 namesakes is in any case considered plausible.
