Was it an attack? – “Car accident”: deputy head of pro-Russian Kherson dead

Date:

The deputy head of the annexed Ukrainian region of Kherson, Kirill Stremusov, is dead. According to preliminary reports, the official of the Russian occupying forces was killed in a car accident, Russian media reported, based on official information. There are doubts whether Stremusov’s death was an accident: It comes at a time when Ukraine’s counter-offensive is approaching the city of Kherson. The deputy chief of authorities had ordered evacuations in October.

According to the Russian authorities, the car accident that killed Stremousov took place in Henichesk in the southeastern Kherson region. The exact circumstances of the incident are unknown at this time. The pro-Russian governor of the occupied Ukrainian region, Volodymyr Saldo, confirmed the death on Wednesday: “It is very difficult for me to say that Kirill Stremusov died today, he died in the Kherson region while traveling in a car that crashed.” explained in a video message.

The official was a fiery, pro-Russian champion. Even before the invasion of Russia in February, he organized pro-Russian actions and held positions in local branches of pro-Russian movements.

Was it an attack?
There is speculation online whether Stremoussow’s death was not an accident but an attack. There have been multiple attacks on Russian officials in the Kherson region, many of them fatal.

On Nov. 7, Russian Duma deputy and former Donetsk separatist leader Alexander Borodai said a security vehicle in his convoy was blown up by a mine in the war zone while passing through Kherson. He shared a video of a mine under his car, claiming that his vehicle could also explode (see above).
