A dead person must be mourned after an apartment fire in Klagenfurt. Half of the 20 evacuated people had to go to hospital. During the eviction there were dangerous scenes, residents wanted to jump.
Shortly after noon, thick smoke billowed from an apartment on the second floor of an apartment building on Khevenhüllerstrasse. Residents of the condominium cried for help, trapped on the upper floors.
“Some residents on the upper floors wanted to jump smoothly. We had to stop them,” reports fire chief Daniel Görtz. “Unfortunately, one person has been found dead in the burned-out apartment. The identity has yet to be clarified,” said police spokesman Dominik Sodamin. The person must have been helplessly burned.
A fire has broken out in the room
“It’s a house fire. Several people have to be locked up,” Wolfgang Germ of the Klagenfurt professional fire brigade reported in an interview with “Krone” at the start of the operation. A total of 20 people in the residential complex had to be evacuated, half of whom were taken to the Klagenfurt clinic with suspected smoke inhalation. There were 50 helpers from the professional fire brigade and some volunteer fire brigades present.
The extinguishing work had to be carried out from the outside with the crane truck and from the inside with heavy respiratory protection. Sometimes there was nothing to see in the stairwell. The cause of the fire has now been determined.
