Trump nominates next billionaire for top job

Date:

Another billionaire! Newly elected US President Donald Trump wants to appoint Jared Isaacman as head of the NASA space agency. The entrepreneur previously attracted attention as an amateur astronaut.

“Jared’s passion for space, his astronaut experience and his dedication to advancing research, unraveling the mysteries of space and advancing the space industry mean he is uniquely qualified to lead NASA into a bold new era,” Trump announced on Wednesday.

Trump made the comments on the platform he co-founded, Truth Social. The nomination is a tribute to him, wrote 41-year-old Isaacman on platform X, who, among other things, earned his money at a payment processing company.

Another day, another billionaire
Isaacman has made waves in recent years with two private space missions: In 2021, he was part of the first space crew in space made up entirely of amateur astronauts, orbiting the Earth with three other people for almost three days.

In September, he and three other amateur astronauts took part in the “Polaris Dawn” mission, climbing to an altitude of about 900 miles (1,400 kilometers) and also briefly ejecting from their spacecraft. On both missions, Isaacman worked with SpaceX, the private space company of technology billionaire Elon Musk, who will now also be part of the Trump administration.

Trump is breaking the custom
In the past, former astronauts or politicians usually got the job of NASA boss. In his first term, Trump nominated former Congressman Jim Bridenstine. Former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson currently heads the agency. He was nominated by current US President Joe Biden. Isaacman’s nomination would still have to be confirmed by the Senate.
