Is it all purely professional? – Domestic private jets actually fly there

Date:

Since the effects of climate change have become increasingly visible, air traffic that is not absolutely necessary has been increasingly criticized. According to the environmental protection organization Greenpeace, private Austrian jets were in constant use during the summer, while many are already restricting themselves when it comes to holiday travel. The most popular destinations can hardly be classified as business travel.

While the Österreichische Bundesbahnen is experiencing an enormous growth in the number of holiday trips by train, this form of holiday travel does not seem to be a problem for higher salary scales. As Greenpeace’s recently released private jet tracker reveals, some are landing Vacation destinations in the top 10 domestic private jet destinations.

Cote d’Azur hot in the course
The most popular destination with 297 take-offs and landings is Nice, followed by Vienna (200 take-offs and landings) and Salzburg (176 take-offs and landings). Ibiza and Milan are also among the most popular destinations. With the new tracker from Greenpeace, Austrian private jets can be tracked in real time and information on fuel consumption and emissions can be retrieved.

‘Austrians moan, turbines get hot’
“Private jets are the most climate-damaging mode of transport and cause about 50 times more emissions than a train journey,” criticizes Greenpeace and calls on Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler to campaign for the regulation of private jets. For example, there are calls for an EU-wide ban on private jets.

“As the Austrians groan in the summer heat, the turbines of Austria’s private jets heat up. The planes are blowing huge amounts of climate-damaging greenhouse gases into the air and continue to fuel the climate crisis,” criticizes Jasmin Duregger, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace in Austria.

Private jets flew around the world 52 times
According to the organization’s initial estimates, Austrian private jets covered a total of about two million kilometers in August, flew more than 52 times around the world and caused about 10,133 tons of CO2 emissions.

To illustrate the scale of the problem, the environmental protection organization has launched a website on which the flight movements of Austrian private jets can be tracked in real time and the flight history of the jets for the past 30 days can be viewed.
