Serious accident – tractor car crashed into fence: migrants in hospital

Dramatic scenes unfolded around 6 a.m. on Tuesday at the border crossing at Horitschon in the Oberpullendorf district. When officers tried to check a blue van, the driver stepped on the gas. He took off at breakneck speed, followed by the officers.

After a chase of almost seven kilometers, the fleeing driver may have lost his way in the thick morning fog in the middle of Horitschon. “The driver drove over a stop sign in front of our school. Fortunately, classes hadn’t started yet and there was no one on the street,” says a shocked resident.

At the intersection of Bachgasse and Feldgasse, the van collided with a garden gate. “Suddenly there was a bang. At first I thought the garbage collection was at work. Then I saw the blue lights of the emergency services,” reports the affected homeowner.

15 migrants on board
The driver of the accident fled on foot. While the smuggler wanted to return to Hungary, 15 refugees were discovered in the hold of his van. Six of the Syrians, Turks and Palestinians were injured in the crash and emergency services took the patients to hospitals in Oberpullendorf and Eisenstadt.

The police were able to quickly apprehend the escaped smuggler, a 22-year-old Turk and the accomplice (46) in an escort vehicle. “The seized cell phones of the perpetrators are now being evaluated,” the researchers said.

Transporter in the ditch
At around 9:30 a.m., the police caught the next smuggler. The perpetrator had crammed 19 migrants into a yellow van. During a turning maneuver on a freight road in Lutzmannsburg, the van slid into a ditch. The 35-year-old ran away and moments later the handcuffs clicked for him.
