According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of officially recorded corona deaths has fallen sharply since last winter. Nevertheless, the pandemic status is still maintained: according to the reasoning, too many people still die from the effects of a disease.
About 9,400 deaths related to Covid-19 were reported worldwide last week, as WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported in Geneva on Wednesday. That is nearly 90 percent lower than in February, when the weekly high of 75,000 was reached this year.
Disease would be “preventable”
Even if this is a positive development, Tedros said at a press conference that too many people still died “from a preventable and treatable disease”. “Covid-19 is still a pandemic,” says WHO expert Maria Van Kerkhove.
About 2.1 million new infections were registered worldwide in the past week, assuming a high number of unreported cases.
