Terror trial – 16-year-old from Salzburg dreamed of jihad

Date:

A 16-year-old student in Salzburg was sentenced on Wednesday to 18 months in prison for participating in a terrorist organization and giving instructions to commit a terrorist crime. The Chechen is said to have distributed Islamist propaganda material and bomb-making instructions on the Internet and to promote the interests of the “Islamic State”. According to Chats, he was also looking for an opportunity to enter the jihad.

After a tip from the FBI, investigators found thousands of files related to the terrorist militia “Islamic State” on the cell phone of the 16-year-old student from Salzburg. These include videos of IS fighters playing football with a severed skull and religious propaganda songs glorifying the killing of infidels. In addition, the Chechen, calling itself “Mud” on the Internet, organized several instructions for building an explosive, and then published them online itself. In addition, the boy is said to have asked internet acquaintances if they could somehow bring him to the “caliphate”. In several chats, he also regretted living in Europe.

Masked special forces led the accused into court
Four hooded officers from the jailer’s task force led the student in a black hoodie and white sneakers, who had been in custody since June, handcuffed into the courtroom on Wednesday. Police officers from a special unit also lined up in front of the hall. “I wanted to go into jihad. I thought IS had good people,” said the slim boy with thick glasses and long hair before the juvenile judge.

First contact with the terrorist organization on 14
According to his account, the suspect first came into contact with IS when he was 14 years old. At that time, an unknown person is said to have written to him on Instagram and “informed” him about IS. He would have first come into contact with propaganda videos, which he later hoarded and distributed himself. The youngster claimed he had now undergone a change of heart.

Signed beheading of own defender
The judge digs deeper, because just a few weeks ago, during a search of the 16-year-old’s cell, sketches of the beheading of his former lawyer were found. “It’s about beheading a person again, playing football with a head. Why do you draw something like that?” the judge asked. The teen repeated: “I was angry, I was exaggerating. I’m ashamed now.” In addition, self-drawn propaganda materials and sketches of pistols, rifles and explosives were found.

The public prosecutor even believed in his plea that the boy was capable of a terrorist attack. According to the boy’s lawyer, youth coaching, probation, close friends and the plan to go to an HTL should offer the young man perspective for the future.

The verdict that is not final: 18 months unconditional prison for the young Chechen. Defendant has declined to appeal. The prosecutor’s office made no statement.
