The Russian Defense Ministry has reported a small success in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Russian soldiers captured the town of Majorsk near the town of Horliwka, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Sunday. Initially, there was no information from the Ukrainian side. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already spoken in his video address on Saturday evening about the currently particularly violent Russian attacks in Donetsk.
“It’s pure hell out there,” Selenskyj said. The Russian army captured and annexed large parts of Donetsk in September – as well as the neighboring region of Luhansk and Zaporizhia and Kherson to the south – in violation of international law.
In Kherson, on the other hand, the Russians have recently suffered a heavy defeat: despite successful Ukrainian counter-offensives, they withdrew from the eponymous regional capital of Kherson and other places northwest of the Dnipro River more than eight months after the start of the war. On Sunday, Ukrainian media continued to release videos of people cheering as they greeted their troops in Kherson.
Train tickets are already available in advance for cities that are still occupied
Based on the successes in the city of Kherson, Ukrainian Railways is offering presale tickets for travel to Russian-occupied cities. After the seats are released, as expected, one could use these tickets, the operator said on Telegram. Train connections are planned from Kiev to the already recaptured Mariupol, as well as to Donetsk, Luhansk and Simferopol in Crimea. The tickets are offered from 26.50 euros. This is a sign of confidence in the Ukrainian troops that they will quickly liberate the cities from the occupation.
The port city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov was occupied by Russian troops in May. Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine came under the control of pro-Russian separatists in 2014. Simferopol in Crimea has been under Russian control since the annexation of the peninsula in 2014.
