Russia occupies a city in Donetsk, Ukraine

Date:

The intense fighting of the past few days in this city has been “hell”, according to Zelensky.

As aid and peace reach the people of Kherson, fear persists as fighting continues in other locations across the vast battlefield Ukraine has become over the past eight and a half months. After withdrawing from Kherson, Kremlin forces take control of other locations, such as the city of Mayorsk, in an area controlled by Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region.

This was announced on Sunday by the Russian Defense Ministry, whose spokesman, General Igor Konashenkov, stated that “as a result of the successful offensive operations of our troops, the population of Mayorsk has been completely liberated towards Donetsk.” He also stressed that in this advance troops and equipment of the “enemy” have been “eliminated”, according to the TASS news agency.

This city, located on the outskirts of Horlivka, north of Donetsk, had become a “hell” in recent days after fierce fighting between the two sides, according to what Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said yesterday.

In what situation is the newly liberated Kherson in the meantime? Quite relieved, according to residents. As soon as she saw the Ukrainian soldiers arrive, Svetlana Galak was one of many neighbors who shed “tears of happiness” as she realized that the tables had turned for her people and hoped that “Ukraine will finally be liberated.” “I asked our soldiers: is it already a victory? Can we open the champagne?” said the 43-year-old woman who lost her 15-year-old daughter in a Russian bombing.

Despite the luck for the liberation, the situation in Kherson is and will remain difficult in the coming days. Zelensky denounced this Sunday that Moscow had destroyed all critical infrastructure before leaving the territory. The president promised to restore communication facilities, water supply, heating and electricity, although he stressed that it is not yet the time to carry out these works. The most important thing is to eliminate the threat in the area.

The Ukrainian leader explained that 10 groups of experts are working to defuse all types of explosives and have already neutralized 2,000 mines, tripwires and unused ammunition. As a precaution, he asked the population to be careful and not to independently check the buildings, nor the objects left behind by the residents.
