The new year 2023 begins with a small gender revolution: for the first time in history, the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert at the Musikverein will feature not only the Viennese Boys’ Choir, but also the Viennese Choir Girls – the female fraction of the traditional choir, founded in 2004. The young singers wear a uniform or rather a maritime-inspired robe by designer Eva Poleschinski that matches the sailor suit.
“A piece of Austrian design combined with the ‘feminine future’,” Poleschinski describes the outfit sponsored by investor Klemens Hallmann for the 25 chorus girls between the ages of nine and fifteen. Side by side with the choirboys, Josef Strauss’ “Heiterer Muth” will be ushered in together with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst on January 1 – not only ushering in the new year, but also the jubilee year.
525 years Viennese Boys Choir
After all, in 2023 the Vienna Boys’ Choir will celebrate its 525th anniversary. In addition to the New Year’s concert, one of the highlights is the official festive concert on May 14, again in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein.
In addition, the book “Ein Chor conquers the world” by dramaturge Tina Breckwoldt in Böhlau has been announced for the spring, and an anniversary box with 25 CDs for Deutsche Grammofon for the autumn.
