US police warn: ‘Don’t buy owls with drugs’

Date:

Police officers in the US state of Arizona found an unusual load in a car when they pulled out a drunk driver. The man had carried an owl in the passenger seat. After the incident, the executive issued a whimsical warning, urging the public not to do drugs, for fear of buying a wild owl from a stranger.

The unusual police report came too late for a man in the town of Payson. Officers had carried out a traffic check early Wednesday morning and caught the driver behind the wheel under the influence of drugs and alcohol. A young owl was found in the vehicle along with methamphetamine.

The incident prompted police to post a warning on Facebook. “Payson Police would like to remind the public that wildlife should be kept wild,” the post reads. “It is illegal to possess, transport, buy or sell wild animals, except as specifically permitted by Arizona’s revised statutes.” The warning continued: “The Payson Police Department also wants to use this opportunity to encourage the public not to use methamphetamine or you could illegally buy a $100 wild owl from strangers at a local gas station in the middle of the night.

According to the police, the owl was slightly injured and could therefore not be released. The driver was charged with drug possession, driving under the influence and possession, transportation and purchase of wild animals.
