After almost nine months of interruption due to the Russian offensive war, the Ukrainian railways are running again to the southern city of Mykolaiv. The first night train should leave the capital Kiev on Monday evening, the newspaper said. Kherson must also be reconnected to the Ukrainian rail network within ten days, Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov announced on Facebook.
Train traffic to Mykolaiv was suspended in February as Russian troops approached the port city. The liberation of the neighboring city of Kherson has eased the military situation in Mykolaiv. Shortly after Ukrainian troops entered the city, railway chief Oleksandr Kamyshin was given an overview of the necessary preparatory work there on Saturday.
Trains in Ukraine are slow, but largely punctual and reliable despite the war. The functioning railway is one of the forces that holds the attacked country together.
“Significant victory” for Ukraine
US President Joe Biden has described Ukraine’s recapture of the regional capital of Kherson as a “significant victory”. The Ukrainian military is “really great,” Biden said Monday night in Nusa Dua on the Indonesian island of Bali.
