905 million tons of CO2 – EU countries again generated more greenhouse gases

Date:

In the second quarter of this year, more climate-damaging greenhouse gases were emitted in the countries of the European Union than in the previous year. The reason for this is the economic recovery after the corona-related downturn, the statistical authority Eurostat announced on Tuesday in Luxembourg.

According to this, the amount of gases emitted from April to June corresponds to the climate-damaging effect of 905 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) – an increase of three percent compared to the same quarter in 2021. Looking at the sectors, industry was responsible for the largest share of the emissions responsible for 23 percent, followed by electricity and gas supply with 19 percent and households with 17 percent.

Then comes transport and storage with 14 percent and agriculture with 13 percent. Emissions have also increased in almost all sectors, only in agriculture and households have they decreased – by one and eight percent respectively.

In addition to carbon dioxide (CO2), there are other gases with a greenhouse effect. Emissions are often presented in the unit of measure of CO2 equivalent to make a unified statement about their climate impact.
