Continuous development – prognosis: number of new infections remains stable

Date:

In Austria, no major changes are expected in the daily number of new coronavirus infections in the next two weeks. The experts expect a constant number of new cases every day.

There is stagnation in the reported new infections, according to the update published by the Covid prediction consortium on Wednesday. The wastewater signal currently also suggests that incidence rates remain constant, the experts from the Vienna University of Technology, MedUni Vienna and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG) stressed.

As for the variants of the coronavirus circulating in Austria, the share of the new mutations BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 has continuously increased in recent weeks to currently 13 to 14 percent. However, this increase is not relevant to the current forecast.

High fluctuation range in hospitals
The further development in the hospitals is somewhat more difficult to assess. The fluctuation margin is very large in the occupancy of both regular and intensive care beds. Experts assume that the number of hospitals will slowly decrease, but in theory an increase would also be possible.

Occupancy on normal wards is likely to fall from 909 on Tuesday (yesterday) to an average of 743 on November 30, with a range of 585 to 945 occupied beds. In intensive care units, the number of Covid patients could drop from 75 the day before to an average of 63 on Wednesday in two weeks. The fluctuation range is between 45 and 88.
