No attack on Poland – NATO: Missile impact did not come from Russia

Date:

According to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, NATO has no evidence that the missile strike in Poland’s border area with Ukraine was a deliberate attack. According to preliminary analyses, the incident was probably caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile, Stoltenberg said on Wednesday after an emergency meeting in Brussels. There are no indications of an attack on Poland, Polish President Andrzej Duda said.

It is likely that a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile accidentally hit Poland. But that is not Ukraine’s fault, Stoltenberg said. Russia must end this “pointless war”.

No targeted attack on the NATO country
Duda had explained shortly before that it was not a targeted attack on the NATO country. “Nothing, absolutely nothing, indicates that it was a deliberate attack on Poland,” Duda stressed. “What happened, namely that a missile fell on our territory, was not a premeditated act. It was not a targeted missile aimed at Poland.” According to current knowledge, the anti-aircraft missile is a Russian-made S-300 from the 1970s.

Two people were killed in the impact
A “Russian-made missile” hit the eastern Polish village of Przewodow, six kilometers from the border, on Tuesday, according to the Polish government. According to the fire service, two people died at a farm. In its offensive war against Ukraine, Russia fired numerous missiles at the country on Tuesday.

US President Joe Biden had also previously stated that it was unlikely that this missile had been fired into Russia. According to an insider, Biden informed NATO partners on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali that the incident on the Polish border with Ukraine was caused by a misguided Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile.

The Belgian government has evidence that parts of Russian missiles and a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile came down after the deadly explosion in Poland. However, ongoing investigations should confirm this, writes Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder on Twitter on Wednesday.

Russia has nothing to do with the incident, the Kremlin said on Wednesday. “We have seen another hysterical, insane Russophobic reaction that is not based on any real facts,” Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the presidential office, told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday. He wanted to “pay attention to the rather cautious reaction of the Americans, which contrasts with the absolutely hysterical reaction of the Polish side and a number of other countries”.

However, in a written statement in response to Biden, the adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Mykhailo Podoliak, said Russia was responsible for every missile incident. The only logic that can be sustained is that the war was started by Russia and is being waged by Russia.

“Very serious” incident
Poland’s National Security Council (BBN) reconvened at noon for consultations. In Estonia, too, the government is meeting in Tallinn for an extraordinary cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called the meeting for Wednesday afternoon and spoke of an “extremely serious” incident.
