Lack of confidence – The Chinese head of state is annoyed with the Prime Minister of Canada

Date:

Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping is angry with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after bilateral talks. He leaked everything the two had discussed to newspapers. Relations between the two governments have been tense for some time.

“Everything we discussed yesterday was leaked to newspapers. This is not appropriate,” Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping said after bilateral talks at the G20 summit in Bali. This is not how the conversation should be conducted. “Otherwise it’s hard to say what the outcome will be.”

Trudeau: “Believe in free, open conversation”
Trudeau countered that Canada believes in free, open and frank conversation. Perhaps the dialogue can continue, “but there will be things we won’t agree on”.

It was Trudeau and Xi Jinping’s first meeting in more than three years and was not officially declared a meeting. According to press reports, Trudeau complained about China’s interference in Canadian democracy.

Relations between the two countries have been tense for some time. In 2018, at the request of the United States, the Chinese judiciary arrested two Canadians and charged them with alleged espionage. Diplomats at the time spoke of ‘hostage diplomacy’. Earlier, the chief financial officer of the telecom group Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested. She was able to return to China last year after a long tug of war with the US authorities. The two Canadians were also released in barter.
